There have been many great women in history, some of whom are recognised and respected around the world while others have not received the celebration they deserve. In this article, we have compiled a list of women who, in one way or another, have changed the world.

Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) was the prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Known as the Iron Lady, she was famous for her determination and strength, as well as being the first (and still only one of two) female Prime Ministers of the UK. She faced an assassination attempt, oversaw the Falklands war, and introduced major economic reform in the UK, just to name a few of the events during her time in office. Her policies were and are still considered controversial, nonetheless, her impact on politics both in the UK and around the world is undeniable.

Amelia Earheart

Amelia Earheart is famous for being the first female pilot to take of beyond the Atlantic Ocean. Sadly, she is equally famous for her tragical disappearing at the age of 39 in 1937, as she attempted to circumnavigate the globe. She was as well as an accomplished author and a heavy proponent of women’s equality. While her life was cut short, she was an inspiration for many people around the world, particularly women, as thousands of women decided to join the American airforce after her flight across the Atlantic. She received many honours, both when she was alive and following her disappearance, and has inspired countless creative thinkers in their art as well.

Diana Spencer

Diana Spencer, better known as Princess Diana, was a princess in the British royal family. She was born into an aristocratic family associated with the Royals yet, after her education, took a series of low paid jobs, including a role as a part-time nursery assistant. Eventually marrying Prince Charles, she was a strong advocate of many social causes, and kindly thought of as the people’s Princess. Coco Chanel

Chanel is a globally famous brand. Coco Chanel was born in 1883, she was a seamstress and a singer, then a designer and a businesswoman, who radically changed women’s design after World War I. The style of her clothing was more sporty and casual than the previous norm, and she designed the iconic ‘little black dress’ as well as the Chanel logo of intercrossing Cs. Her success, despite relatively poor beginnings, is impressive, and she was associated with many of Europe’s elites and aristocracy.

J.K Rowling

Rowling is author of the globally popular Harry Potter books. The 7 book series, which has been adapted for the stage and silver screen to equal acclaim, is beloved by children and adults alike. She was inspired when sitting on a delayed train, and the rest is history. Her life was not easy however, as Rowling wrote the book when she was unemployed, had a new child and had lost her mother. Following her success she has championed many social causes including ending child poverty.
